Grisbi Graph
Grisbi Graph is a graphing tool writen to visualize finances kept in Grisbi.
I am using Grisbi to keep track of my personal finances since 2005. I like the program very much, but I was always
disappointed not being able to visualize my expenses; with Grisbi Graph you can!
The program is written in Java to make it available for any platform. Just open your Grisbi data file and see for yourself!

How-to
At the moment the program is very simple and thus the how-to also. After starting the application, first click the "open grisbi file" button. Point the program to the location of your grisbi database file. Grisbi Graph will only read this file, no alterations are made.
UPDATE: Some people reported having trouble starting the application. Normally I just double-click the program and let my OS take care of the rest. I discovered that with Windows XP it runs straight away, with SUSE I had so set the 'is executable' bit. You can always start the program from a command line, just tell java to execute a jar-file. You can do this by entering: 'java -jar grisbiGraph.jar'.
After reading the database file, your first account is selected from the pulldown menu. All expense categories are listed and selected on the left and a graph is automatically plotted. The first graph always represents the distribution of all expenses (pie chart). By selecting different accounts, expense categories, dates and graph types you can easily visualize the data you want. To select more than one expense categorie use ctrl and/or shift when clicking them. You can also use the "select all" button to select all categories.
Note to Internet Explorer users: when you download the file it is somehow renamed to a '.zip' file. Rename the file (hit F2) to a '.jar' file again, should do the trick. Other browsers don't show this 'feature'.
Todo
Grisbi Graph is a very simple tool to graph your expenses. Depending on whether graphing of expenses will be available in Grisbi, this tool can be further developed. Naturally the first, implementing in Grisbi, has my vote!
Some things I have in mind for this program at the moment:
- Combining income and expense categories
- Have an overview of all accounts
- Different types of graphs
- Print functionality
- Evolution over time [first attempt is online, thanks to Julien Furgerot]
- Select multiple accounts and aggregate values [Julien from Paris, first alpha attempt is online, thanks to Christophe Desirant]
- Generate categorie-to-colors map only once, don't update colors [Robin from Feucherolles]

Update
I am in the middle of finishing my PhD-thesis, so regrettably I don't have any spare time for further programming and development at the moment. Hopefully in the near future (somewhere after September first :) )
- v0.05alpha - Now multiple accounts can be selected; use CTRL to select multiple. Thanks and credits go to Christophe Desirant for implementing this feature.
- v0.04 - Added timeline graph. Thanks and credits go to Julien Furgerot for implementing this feature.
- v0.03 - Added compliance mode. GrisbiGraph now also works with java 1.5 (specially for some Linux users).
- v0.02 - Added command line argument: 'java -jar grisbiGraph.jar myaccountfile.gsb' should work.
- v0.01 - Fixed comma instead of a dot to indicate decimal figures in some countries.
- v0.00 - Initial release

Hello, Bonjour,
[EN] Since there's still no graphs in Grisbi 6, i'm working on a totally new version of GrisbiGraph which will work with both v0.5.0 and v0.6.0 files and allow to display stats closest to reports in Grisbi. I should be able to do a first release in mid-september. More information coming next week.
Sincerely, Cordialement,

I just spend half a day on trying to rewrite the program in order for it to be able to work with Grisbi v6. Unfortunately, the xml file format really changed a lot and I think it would be better to completely rewrite the software. I don't have time for this now. Maybe the version of Mathieu from FRANCE works? I don't know whether the official Grisbi crew is looking for this functionality.
Sorry! |

Hi Wessel,
Found one issue with the multiple acounts selection. On one particular category I get correct figures when drawing account by account and when selecting all accounts, it gives me an aberrant figure (4 account, approx 5+100+50+10=3000 !).
If you want to investigate deeper, I can provide you the file for you to look at.

Hi Wessel,
I downloaded the code, but couldn't get through it. I must say it's my first time in Java. But I saw the part where the graph is defined and it would seem the function used doesn't give the choice of colors. It seems it's the graphing API that defines its own palette on the fly.

| I have just installed vr 0.5.9 for windows. Looks like a great tool. I have imported OFX files from my bank. Is there any way to automatically associate the third party title with a category? Example, a transaction “CARD PMNT 11DEC TESCO UPT 4055”, the word “CARD” linked to a debit card, the phrase “Tesco UPT” linked to the category Car and sub category Fuel…. If not, is there a way of selecting multiple transactions to categorise together? |

Hi Wessel,
Many thanks for this app, it helps so much ! I like the Timeline feature and multiple acounts on 0.05. Previously I had to edit the Grisbi file to merge the accounts to get all-accounts graphs.
However, the multiple account seems to have a problem with my file. Each individual account seems to be OK, as seen by comparing Grisbi numbers with graph. But for instance today the multiple accounts graph displays 10500€ when it should display 4500€.
Is there a way to get this fixed ? Are there other people experiencing the same problem ? Do you have any clue to it ? Would it help if I send you my file to get it examined ?
Thanks in advance !

| It's a great visualization indeed, though I would suggest visualization not only for accounta but categories as well. eg. I select 2: "Car sale" (credit) and "Car buy" (debit) categories and then I could see how the business goes, whether I spent more then I earned. Like "Car sale" 60%, EUR 600 and "Car buy" 40% EUR 400 - I would donate for it EUR 10. Anyone else to add some bucks for development? |

Patrick,
Ubuntu comes with an older version of Java (1.4), you need to download a newer version from java.com: use the second file from http://java.com/en/download/linux_manual.jsp
Follow the instructions from the website.
After installation be sure to use the updated java binary. You can find this file under 'java-install-dir'/bin/java
'java -version' should give version 1.6 and NOT 1.4.
Now it works!
(* I just tried this on my brand new Ubuntu installation *) |

Only thing I would like to add to the Todo list, which I think is not too difficult, is to generate te categorie-to-colors map once and for all when opening the file. Then one will identify categories at one glance when switching accounts.

Fumanchu from Madrid @ 16:03:45 on 04-03-2008 |
Fumanchu,
If you download the .jar file, somehow internet explorer renames this file to a .zip file. Therefore when you double click it, you just go into the package. Try to either use another browser (eg. Firefox) to download the file, or rename the downloaded file back to a .jar file. I guess you have to have "Hide extensions for known file types" turn off in the Tools -> Folder Options -> View tab menu.
Good luck.
If it doesn't work I'll try to setup a ftp-site to host the files. Hopefully Internet Explorer doesn't rewrite file extensions from ftp site. |

In XP you can just double click the .jar file if you have java installed.
Otherwise start the application by java itself by typing: "java -jar grisbiGraph.jar" in the command prompt. Evidently for both routines you need java installed. |

Hello Wessel
First, thanks for this tool :
Grisbi is a good software and the only missing thing WAS charts.
1 question :
1) is it possible to see also incomes ? I can only see my expanses is it normal ? is there something to configure grisbi side ?
Enhancement suggestions:
1) 2 new drop down menus :
- 1 to choose % or amounts
- 1 to choose expanse/income
- add a new var chart combined with expanses and incomes.
2) add the possibility to zoom :
click on a part of the graph to get the data lines behind the computation...
OK I know that I ask a lot ;-)
So if I get a chance I'll look a little bit the code to see how hard it would be to help you to implement this kind of stuff.
In this case I will let you know of course.
Thanks again !
Best Regards |

Hi Wessel!
I just tried your piece of software - very promising, thanks for that!
Here are a few comments:
Background: running under linux ubuntu 7.04 feisty
1/ Only jre 6 is supported, I got an error while trying to run with 1.5 You probably should add a release note or compile with jdk 1.5 compat (if possible...)
2/ You could add a command line parsing to directly open a file from the command line (like java -jar grisbiGraph.jar myaccountfile.gsb)
3/ As another graph, I would like to see the evolution of my account's balance over time. More generally, you can get some inspiration from ms-money, they are quite good at doing pretty graphs :)
Once again, thanks for this and hope it can get into gribi soon!
Cheers,
Gilles |
